Seth Godin has valuable counsel for anyone who wants to create a new endeavor in our changing world. I’ve been paying attention for more than four years. Learn more here.

One of my strongest early impressions was what he says about tribes. His advice: don’t try to reach everyone, don’t try to convert the people who don’t like your story, don’t pursue people who aren’t interested. Find people who are excited about what you’re doing. Excited, eager to be part of it, and tell people about it. That’s your tribe. Ignore the rest.

I love this idea. It helps me avoid a lot of frustration and wasted effort. And eases the heartache and fear connected to acceptance and rejection. I know our tribe is out there. I’m figuring you’re part of it. Who are we? First, we care a great deal about at least one good and important thing. We see some deep needs for fundamental change. We fight against our negative temptations, from blame to despair to superiority.

We care about lots of different things. Don’t frack it up. Crippling the biosphere is a really bad idea. It would be good to give democracy another try. More consciousness of the planet, each other, gratitude, and our higher natures is very good, and probably required. Changing the world is the only fit work for a grown man (person). Local resilient communities are better and will save lives. Income inequality and the capture of the government by financial speculators and profiteers is incredibly dangerous. And so on.

I’m working to gather our tribe, to serve us, to encourage us to amplify our investments of time and energy, to work together. I’m building a team to put innovative ways to harness our powerful impulses into action. To work in full view of the staggeringly high stakes we’re facing.

Our tribe has its eyes very much open, and we consistently bring ourselves back to a center that’s about optimism and hope for a better tomorrow. And grounded in self-care and gratitude, awareness of privilege and first world problems.

The energy bound up in our tribe is incalculable. Like the solar energy falling on New Mexico it’s enough to power the whole planet. I believe if properly found, nourished, focused, and amplified it’s enough energy to save the world.

People are beginning to feel it. Every time a pipeline is actually stopped, every time Nestle’s not allowed to buy another river and sell us the water. The bad things are really happening. Our tribe knows, or is beginning to suspect, that what we’ve already been doing won’t be strong enough soon enough. We have to keep going forward with what we already know. And new ways to save the world need to keep being invented. Invented in a hurry and put into practice.
